Public Sector Index

Enabling accountability through data.

Public sector activities have two effects on a country's performance: directly, through the level and changes in productivity within the public sector and indirectly, by permitting increased productivity in the private sector. As a result, the activities of a country’s public sector have a direct impact on the socioeconomic well-being of its citizens.

We are developing the Aig-Imoukhuede Public Sector Index, in partnership with the Nigerian Economic Summit Group, to provide accurate information about the performance of key Nigerian Ministries, Departments and Agencies with the following objectives:

  • Performance Improvement To identify success factors for improved public sector performance and provide the government with an objective view of areas of progress and areas for performance improvement. We will also encourage the development of supportive policies and processes that will lead to improved public sector performance.

  • Accountability To provide stakeholders with information about public sector performance in an accessible manner to spur accountability.

  • Citizen Engagement To encourage informed national debate and create a platform for citizen engagement with the public sector. This will help drive citizens’ interests in seeking improved governance.

  • Monitoring and Evaluation To track changes in public sector performance over time.

Key partners in the development of the Index include the National Bureau of Statistics, the Office of the Secretary to the Federal Government, the Office of the Head of Civil Service of the Federation and SERVICOM.

The Index is currently under development and the results of the pilot will be available in 2023.
